Death in Tarot

Meaning, love, work, money and advice

Death
Group: Major Arcana
Number: XIII
Keywords: end of a cycle, transformation, renewal
Yes or no: No

Death is the card of the ending that sets you free. It doesn't speak of physical death: it speaks of cycles that end to make room for something new.

What Death means

Death is arcanum XIII and it's the most feared and most misunderstood card in tarot. What it announces is transformation: something ends — a relationship, a job, a way of living — and that ending is necessary.

In a spread, it says there's no going back. Holding on to what has already ended only drags out the pain. Once you accept the ending, it becomes one of the most liberating cards in the deck.

It also speaks of clearing out: cutting ties with people, habits and environments that no longer serve you.

The card image

A knight in black armor rides forward carrying a white banner, and before him are people from every walk of life. In the background, the sun rises between two towers. The knight plays no favorites; the white banner is cleansing; the sun in the background is what comes next.

Death in love

In love, it points to the end of a phase. It can be a final breakup, but also the end of a way of being in the relationship, which transforms. In questions about getting back together, it usually says that what existed won't come back the way it was — if there's a return, it will be something different.

What do they feel for me? Death in feelings

For “what do they feel for me?”, Death shows feelings that have changed. This person no longer feels the way they used to. It may be detachment, weariness or acceptance that the chapter is closed. It's a hard answer, but an honest one — and better than going on waiting.

Death at work

At work, it speaks of a contract ending, a change of field or a career cycle coming to a close. Scary at the time, but it usually clears the way for something better.

Death and money

In finances, it points to the end of a way of handling money: closing accounts, paying off debts, changing your life. Things may get tight before they get better.

Death reversed

Reversed, it shows resistance to the ending: clinging to what has already died, fear of change, a grieving process that isn't moving forward. The advice is to let go.

Combinations with other cards

Death with The Fool: the end of a cycle followed by a complete fresh start, often somewhere else.

Death with the Ten of Swords: a painful but final ending: the worst is over.

Death with The Star: after the loss come healing and hope.

Death in a yes-or-no reading

In Yes or No Tarot, Death answers no. The full answer, with the why, depends on your question.

Mestre Cruz's advice

Let go of what has already ended. It's not defeat, it's clearing out. Only with empty hands can you receive what comes next.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Death card mean someone is going to die?

No. In serious tarot, Death speaks of the end of cycles and transformation, not physical death.

Does Death in love always mean a breakup?

Not always. It can be the end of one phase of the relationship, which transforms into a new way of being together.

Is Death a yes or a no?

The answer is no, because what you're asking about belongs to a cycle that is coming to an end.
