Strength in Tarot

Meaning, love, work, money and advice

Strength
Group: Major Arcana
Number: VIII
Keywords: courage, patience, self-mastery
Yes or no: Yes

Strength is the card of calm courage. It speaks of mastering your impulses with patience, not violence, and of enduring what once seemed impossible.

What Strength means

Strength is arcanum VIII and shows a power that doesn't need to shout. It's the courage of someone who faces hardship calmly, who has mastery over their own anger, their own fear and their own desire.

In a spread, it says you're stronger than you think and that the situation will be resolved through persistence, not by fighting. What you tried to force didn't work; with patience, it will.

It also speaks of emotional health and endurance: long stretches you get through, temptations you overcome, difficult people who calm down when handled gently instead of confronted.

The card image

A woman closes a lion's jaws with her bare hands, with no apparent effort, the infinity symbol above her head. The lion is instinct; the gentle hands are mastery through tenderness; the infinity symbol is a strength that never runs out.

Strength in love

In love, Strength asks you to be patient with the other person and firm with yourself. It points to relationships that survive hard times because someone had the maturity not to give up at the first problem. If you're single, it speaks of someone who is won over slowly. For reconciliations, it's a good card: time and calm are working in your favor.

What do they feel for me? Strength in feelings

For “what do they feel for me?”, Strength shows a strong but controlled feeling. This person truly likes you, but holds back — out of pride, out of fear of looking vulnerable or out of respect for the moment. Don't mistake their calm for indifference: inside, they feel much more than they let you see.

Strength at work

At work, it favors people who deal with difficult people, pressure or physical work. It says you'll succeed, but with sustained effort. Good for negotiations where you need to keep a cool head.

Strength and money

In finances, it asks for self-control: cut out impulse spending and stick to the plan month after month. It's the card of someone climbing out of debt little by little, with discipline.

Strength reversed

Reversed, it shows impulsiveness, poorly managed anger, insecurity or exhaustion. It may mean you're carrying too much and have reached your limit. If so, asking for help isn't weakness.

Combinations with other cards

Strength with The Sun: a calm victory: what you've endured will end in light.

Strength with The Devil: overcoming an addiction, an obsession or a relationship that holds you captive.

Strength with the Nine of Wands: you're close to the end of the test — not long now, don't give up.

Strength in a yes-or-no reading

In Yes or No Tarot, Strength answers yes. The full answer, with the why, depends on your question.

Mestre Cruz's advice

Don't rise to the bait. Breathe, wait for the right moment and stand firm. Your patience is worth more than any argument you could win.
